Why is this interview so good ?

Most media interview performances are...OK. Fine.

Too few are really, really good. Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia President Martin Coote's recent interview stands out for all the right reasons. (Starts at 1h 36m.)

The interview was inspired by several talkback calls reporting that emergency "locksmiths" had dramatically underquoted for emergency jobs, done shoddy work, then charged extortionate prices and REFUSED TO LEAVE without payment.

What Martin got right:

His mood matched the moment. He was angry that this is happening. Such anger is good.

He was totally across the issue. Unlike many childcare luminaries who are unaware of their sector, Martin was fully able to explain this recent phenomenon.

Martin immediately explained that this was organised crime by thugs masquerading as locksmiths but who were infact unqualified and not his members.

He wasted little time explaining that he'd already addressed this crime trend with government and had offered one solution (protecting the term "locksmith" for genuine locksmiths only.

Oh - he noted that the government had been sitting on this cheap, simple change and that Victoria leads the nation in this crime category. Too many spokespeople protect their powerful overlords.

Martin empathised with callers and acknowledged that for single or vulnerable clients the presence of a man demanding $1000 at 3am was very threatening indeed.

He promoted an online complaint mechanism and promoted his members' services.

He flew to Melbourne to attend in person.

Well played Mr President - 10/10.
